Commission a pet portrait of your dog, cat or other animal

Would you like to have your pet drawn? I create hand-drawn pet portraits based on your photos, with attention to detail, expression and character. Whether it’s a dog, cat, horse, rabbit, bird or another animal: a pet is never “just an animal”. It’s that familiar look, soft fur, funny expression or tiny detail that makes them feel like them.

A personal pet portrait is a meaningful keepsake for yourself, but also a special gift or memory for someone else.

Have your pet drawn

What can I draw for you?

I mainly create pet portraits and animal portraits, such as dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds and other animals. Do you have another animal in mind? Feel free to send me a message, and I’ll be happy to think along with you.

By default, I draw one animal per portrait. A second animal in the same drawing is sometimes possible for an additional fee, depending on the size, composition and available reference photos.

A pet portrait can be a personal artwork for yourself, but also a meaningful gift for someone else.

Choose your style: graphite, pastel or colored pencil

You can choose from three materials. Each material has its own look and feel.

Graphite pencil

A graphite pencil portrait is classic, calm and detailed. Because the portrait is drawn in black and white, the focus is on light, shadow, shape and expression. This material is a good choice if you like a timeless and subtle look.

Pastel pencil

Pastel pencil has a soft, colorful look and works beautifully for animals with lots of fur texture. It gives a warm and lively effect, with soft transitions and fine details.

Colored pencil

Colored pencil is refined, colorful and detailed. This material is a good choice if you would like a realistic portrait with lots of attention to color, texture and small details.

Sizes and prices

A pet portrait commission starts at €100 for an A5 portrait in graphite pencil. The price depends on the size, material and number of animals. The prices below are for one animal without a detailed background.

Would you like to know what is possible for your pet?
Feel free to send me a message with your idea and a few photos. I’ll be happy to take a look with you.

How does a commission work?

A pet portrait starts with your idea and a few clear photos. After that, we’ll look together at the size, material and style that best fit your pet.

1. You send me your idea and photos

Tell me which animal you would like me to draw and send one or more clear photos. You don’t need to know exactly which photo is best yet, I can help you choose.

2. We discuss the options

I’ll look at the photos, the size, material and any wishes you have. Then I’ll let you know what is possible and what the price will be.

3. After approval, I start drawing

Once everything is clear and the deposit has been paid, I’ll schedule the drawing and start working on your pet portrait.

4. You receive the original portrait

When the drawing is finished, you’ll receive the original artwork. Pickup in Wageningen may be possible by agreement. Shipping is also possible.

A special gift

A portrait as a gift or memory

A pet portrait is very personal. That makes it a lovely gift for someone else, but also a meaningful keepsake for yourself. For example, for a birthday, farewell, anniversary or as a memory of a beloved pet.

Would you like to give a portrait as a gift and do you have a specific date in mind? Please contact me in time. A hand-drawn portrait takes time, and I want to make sure I have enough space to work on it with care.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, I create pet portraits based on clear photos.
I mainly draw pets and animal portraits, such as:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Birds
  • Bunnies
  • Horses

But other animals are possible as well! Let me know what you have in mind and we’ll look at the options together.

By default, I draw one animal per portrait. A second animal in the same drawing may be possible for an additional fee, depending on the size, composition and available reference photos.

Yes, a pet portrait can be a very personal gift! Please contact me in time if you need the portrait for a specific date.

  1. You send me your request
You can contact me via the contact form or by email at hello@kimhartart.com. Tell me about your idea or request, the size you would like and the material you prefer. If possible, please also send one or more clear photos of your pet (or other animal you’d like me to draw).

Not exactly sure what you want yet? No problem at all. I’m happy to help you decide which photo is most suitable and which material best fits your wishes.

  2. We choose the best photo together
The quality of the photo is important for the final result, because I mainly draw based on what is visible. The better the reference photo(s), the more beautiful and personal the portrait will be. I can make small adjustments or combine elements if needed.

  3. You pay a deposit
Once we have discussed and confirmed the commission, I ask for a 25% deposit. As soon as I receive the deposit, your place in my schedule is secured.

The deposit is necessary because I reserve time for your commission, need materials, and start working especially for you.

  4. I create the drawing
Once I begin, I work on the portrait with care and love. I will send you a photo of the initial sketch so you can see whether the setup is as you would like it. At that stage, I can still make small adjustments if needed. During the rest of the process, I can also send you an update if you would like. Please keep in mind that major changes are no longer possible once I have started.

Because this is handmade work, every portrait is unique. The final result is my own interpretation of your pet or animal, based on the photos you provide.

  5. You receive a photo of the finished result
When the drawing is finished, I will send you a photo of the final result. You can still let me know if something small needs to be adjusted. Large changes such as a different pose, a different photo, or different colors or materials, are no longer possible once I have started the drawing.

  6. You pay the remaining amount
Once you approve the finished portrait, you pay the remaining amount, plus any shipping costs. After that, the drawing will be carefully packaged and sent to you. Pickup in Wageningen is possible as well.

Yes, I do take commissions outside of the Netherlands. Please let me know where you’re from, so we can work out the specifics.

When you commission a drawing, you will receive:

  • An original handmade drawing of your pet
  • A drawing based on the agreed photo(s) and your wishes
  • The drawing in your chosen size and material
  • Careful packaging for shipping
  • A photo of the initial sketch, at the start of the drawing process
  • A photo of the finished result before the drawing is shipped

A frame or mount is not included.

A good photo really makes all the difference. For the best possible result, I prefer to receive photos that meet as many of the points below as possible. Ideally, I would like to receive multiple photos, so we can decide together which one works best as the basis for the drawing.

A5

A smaller, personal portrait of one animal. Beautiful for a close-up or head portrait.

More room for detail and expression. Recommended for a more detailed portrait or possibly two animals.

* For drawings made with pastel pencils I use special paper, so these sizes may vary slightly. Feel free to ask about the possibilities if you are interested in a pastel pencil drawing.

You can choose from the following materials:

Graphite pencil

A classic black-and-white portrait with great attention to light, shadow and detail.

All prices are exclusive of shipping costs and exclusive of a frame or mount.

Additional charge for an extra animal: +30%
Please note: an extra animal is not possible in all cases, as this depends on the size and the available photos. We can determine this beforehand.

A second animal means more work, more detail and often more adjustments in the composition, which is why an additional charge applies.
A background or extra detail will also affect the price. In that case, I will always discuss this with you in advance, so you know exactly what to expect.

For every commission, I ask for a 25% deposit. This should be paid (digitally) within one week after confirming the commission. As soon as the deposit is received, I will schedule your drawing. If the deposit has not been paid within one week, the commission will be cancelled.

Once the drawing is finished, you pay the remaining 75%, plus any shipping costs. After I receive the remaining amount, I will send the drawing to you, or you may collect it in Wageningen.

If the customer cancels the commission after it has been confirmed, the deposit will not be refunded. This is because I will already have reserved time, been in contact with you, and may already have made preparations or started the drawing.

Pickup in Wageningen may be possible by agreement. Shipping is also possible and comes with additional costs.

Because I draw everything by hand, every portrait is unique. My aim is to capture your pet as recognisably and beautifully as possible, but a drawing will always remain an artistic interpretation and is not an exact copy of a photo. You will always be able to see that it is a drawing.

Colors may look slightly different in real life than they do on a screen. The final result may differ slightly from the photos sent due to lighting or screen settings.

I will also take photos of the finished portrait to use in my portfolio, on my website or on my social media. Would you prefer that I do not do this, for example because the portrait is a surprise or a gift? Just let me know in advance, and I will take that into account.
